For Undergraduate Sophomores and Juniors
This year, the annual program will run from May 27–July 25, 2025. It provides hands-on summer research experiences and a multi-disciplinary curriculum to undergraduate students residing in the Islands of Hawaiʻi and the Pacific to reinforce their intent to graduate with a science degree and to consider a career to address health disparities and contribute to drug discovery.

For Undergraduate Sophomores and Juniors
This year, the annual program will run from May 27–July 25, 2025. It provides hands-on summer research experiences and a multi-disciplinary curriculum to undergraduate students residing in the Islands of Hawaiʻi and the Pacific to reinforce their intent to graduate with a science degree and to consider a career to address health disparities and contribute to drug discovery.
Areas of Research
Each student will be paired with a faculty mentor to work in one of our two UH Cancer Center research programs:
- Population Sciences in the Pacific: epidemiology, nutrition, biostatistics, bioinformatics, behavior change, quality of life in cancer survivors, community-based interventions to promote cancer preventive lifestyles in Hawaiʻi's multiethnic population
- Cancer Biology: molecular carcinogenesis, metastasis, drug discovery, cancer immunology, molecular mechanisms underlying cancer disparities, and new therapeutic approaches to cancer treatment and diagnosis

Program Components
In addition to mentored research project, students will participate in the following activities:
- An orientation session and tour of the UH Cancer Center
- Training in the responsible conduct of research, laboratory safety, and/or human research protection
- Writing seminars and participation in manuscript preparation
- Journal clubs and research seminars
- Student poster presentations
- For UH students, continuation of research activities during fall and spring semester is a possibility.
Eligibility Requirements
Application to the internship is open to students who are:
- Currently enrolled, at the time of application, as a sophomore or junior in an accredited college or university
- Students enrolled at UH Hilo and the University of Guam may apply for travel funds
- Academically outstanding (at least a 3.5 GPA)
- Stated interest in cancer research
- Must be Hawaiʻi or Guam residents
- Able to commit to a full-time summer research experience (8 weeks at 40 hours per week)
Priority will be given to eligible applicants who:
- Express a cancer-related research interest that matches an available mentor’s focus in population or laboratory-based research
- Relevant research experience and skills
- Successful completion of college-level courses or training in the areas of biological, chemical, molecular, genetic, public health, nutritional, behavioral, clinical, computational, mathematical, or statistical sciences
- First generation college or low socioeconomic status of the family

Compensation
Participants receive hourly pay according to University of Hawaiʻi schedules for their full-time participation in the internship program.
- For students from the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo and the University of Guam, housing, transportation, or travel expenses may be available.
