Research Focus

Our research is focused on identifying mechanisms by which inflammation and immune responses are regulated. Our recent work identified the endogenous inhibitor of calpain enzymes, calpastatin, as a protein upregulated in human IBD tissues as well as chronically inflamed colon tissue in mice subjected to dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis. The central role of calpastatin in limiting inflammation suggests that intervention with a synthetic calpain-2 inhibitor may assist the endogenous response to inflammation and thereby serve as an effective approach to treating IBD and preventing colorectal cancer. Thus, our goal is to develop calpain-2 inhibitor therapy for treating IBD and preventing the development of colorectal cancer. Other cancer interests involve identifying potential therapeutic targets for treating melanoma, and on-going pre-clinical studies have successfully generated a promising candidate, selenoprotein K, which will be further investigated.
