Research Focus

Dr. Cheng is an Associate Professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the University of California at San Francisco and a University of Hawaiʻi Cancer Center member. She also serves as a co-Investigator of the SEER Greater Bay Area Cancer Registry. She is a cancer and genetic epidemiologist, and Principal Investigator of multiple NIH- and foundation-funded projects aimed at examining genetics, lifestyle factors, and neighborhood characteristics in relation to cancer risk. She has an extensive research program investigating racial/ethnic differences in cancer risk with expertise in leading population-based cancer surveillance studies that document the variation in cancer incidence and mortality patterns across race/ethnicity.

Her research in cancer surveillance has characterized the incidence of lung cancer among Asian American Native Hawaiian Pacific Islanders (AANHPIs), revealing the importance of disaggregating AANHPIs into specific population groups and their heterogeneity in disease burden. Specifically, her findings were the first to report the increasing incidence rates of adenocarcinoma for Filipino and Korean women (1990-2010) and Chinese men (1996-2010) and increasing rates of squamous cell carcinoma for Japanese women (1990-2010).

Dr. Cheng and colleagues conducted the first genome-wide association studies of prostate cancer in Japanese Americans and Latinos, identifying established risk loci for prostate cancer to also be associated with risk of disease in these two populations. In addition, her studies have examined pleiotropy and cancer, and identified a prostate cancer variant in region 1 of chromosome 8q24 to be associated with colorectal cancer susceptibility; and a breast cancer variant in the gene, lymphocyte-specific protein 1, that also influenced lung cancer susceptibility.

Dr. Cheng has developed a growing portfolio of studies examining the neighborhood environment and cancer risk, applying geospatial approaches to residential history data within the Multiethnic Cohort. Her research has identified the influence of the neighborhood obesogenic environment and cancer risk. Specifically, finding an association between neighborhood socioeconomic status, ubanicity, and mixed-land development and risk of breast cancer; and traffic-density to be associated with colorectal cancer.
