Research Focus

I am interested in eliminating health disparities through research and training in the Pacific Islands. My early work in nutritional epidemiology provided some of the first documented estimates of childhood overweight and obesity prevalence in the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas and in Guam. My work on feasting behaviors led me to another cultural behavior observed at fiestas or parties in the Mariana Islands – areca (betel) nut chewing. I have been studying the epidemiology and public health of areca (betel) nut chewing for over 10 years, including measuring the chewing variation among Micronesian populations, screening for oral precancer, studying the influence of areca (betel) nut chewing on the oral microbiome, and developing an areca (betel) nut cessation program. My most recent research is focused on establishing an epidemiologic cohort to study cardiometabolic diseases in the Pacific Islands. I am working to sustain the cohort through a public health curriculum at colleges or universities in the region.
